Description
Three hours of lecture per week. This course is concerned with the use of Database Management Systems (DBMS) to solve a wide range of information storage, management and retrieval problems, in organizations ranging from large corporations to personal applications, such as research data management. The course combines the practical aspects of DBMS use with more theoretical discussions of database design methodologies and the "internals" of database systems.
A significant part of the course will have students designing their own database and implementing it on different DBMS' running on different computer systems. We will use primarily MySQL (Oracle may also be available). Other DBMS may also be used in addition to these, such as PostgreSQL and Access.
In the theoretical portion of the course we will examine the major types, or data models, of DBMS (hierarchical, network, relational, and object-oriented). We will discuss the principles and problems of database design, operation, and maintenance for each data model.

These sessions are informal and completely optional so feel free to join any of the sessions you are interested in. I will try to post the topics of each session and the slides on both piazza and the course website. Below are the details for the first session -
Topic: HTML & CSS
Date: Monday 10/8
Time: 6 - 7 PM
Place: Room 205, South Hall
Some Notes: I will cover some of the basics of HTML and CSS but will try to highlight some points that have helped me with my work developing websites.
If you can't make these sessions then feel free to see me at office hours or email me so we can figure something out. The next sessions after this will cover PHP.
