Description

Undergraduate Prerequisites: two years of high school algebra.
For science majors and minors who require a two-semester general chemistry course. Topics include: atoms and molecules; molecular connectivity, infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry; stoichiometry and introduction to reactions in aqueous solutions; thermochemistry and the first law of thermodynamics; quantum aspects of light and matter; and bonding in diatomic and polyatomic molecules. Laboratory exercises include: the size of an atom, qualitative analysis, thermochemistry, and quantum aspects of light and matter. Students must register for the following four course components: lecture, discussion, pre-lab lecture and laboratory. Carries natural science divisional credit (with lab) in CAS.

General Information

Lecture: T,R 5-6.30 - LSE B01
Led by Prof. Keyes. Aim to cover theory and background of important concepts. Come prepared, with at least an idea of what the lecture will be about and after reviewing previous material; this course keeps building on your previous knowledge. If you miss one concept, the following ones will be completely obscure. Don't be shy and ask as many questions as you need. It is a relatively small class and discussion is very welcome and encouraged!
Discussion: B1 Thu 2:00-3:00 COM 210; B2 Thu 6:30-7:30 PSY B53; B3 Fri 1:00-2:00 PSY B49; B4 Fri 12:00-1:00 PRB 146; B5 Fri 2:00-3:00 PSY B55.
Led by Dr. Ramella. - All these sections are identical. You need to be officially registered in one of them, but we don't mind if you come to a different one if you need to. As long as there are chairs in the rooms you're welcome to join any of them. During this time, we'll review the material from lecture, make sure all questions are answered and transition into applying the theory to problem solving skills.
Practice - Mon 7-8.30pm SCI 512 (yes, this room exists, despite being very well hidden)
Led by Dr. Ramella - This is some kind of study group and is designed to help finish the practice packets I hand out the previous week. In theory you should have already finished them by the week-end, but if you need extra-help, this is the best time to come and work together with other students. It is crucial that the material of the previous week is well digested before you approach the material of the week.
Pre-lab Lecture: Thu 1-2pm SCI 109
Led by Dr. Golger/Dr. Ramella. This pre-lab lecture is designed to help you prepare for the FOLLOWING week lab experience.
Lab: Laboratory sessions are in SCI 268 on Wednesday at 2:00-5:00pm (sec. L1, L2) and 5:30-8:30pm (sec. L4, L5 and MET L5), on Thursday at 8:00- 11:00am (sec. L6) and Friday at 5:00-8:00pm (sec L3 and L7).
Led by Dr. Ramella and other TFs. For more info on the schedule and content see the lab syllabus at http://people.bu.edu/keyes/ch101/labsyllabus.html
Office hours
A comprehensive list of office hours for Prof. Keyes, Dr. Golger and Dr. Ramella can be found at: http://people.bu.edu/keyes/ch101/officeHours.html - Please note, this may change. That page will be kept up-to-date weekly.
Materials and resources
Textbook: "Chemical Principles - the quest for insight"
Lab Manual: "General Chemistry - Laboratory Manual"
Homework: On http://www.webassign.net
Practice problems: Weekly "practice sheets" will be passed out during discussion and posted at https://piazza.com/bu/spring2014/ch101/resources; so will their answer keys few days later.
Pre-lec self-tests: will be published at http://people.bu.edu/keyes/ch101/index.html on Sunday mornings as pdf files. You will need to print them, solve them and turn them in during lecture. These are supposed to help you come to lecture with some clue of what we are going to discuss. It is OK not to be able to completely solve it, as long as you try it will be counted for extra credit at the end of the semester.
Review sessions
Led by Dr. Ramella. Before each exam, a review session will be organized to help you be ready for the exams. Stay tune for announcements of dates, times and rooms.

Announcements

Discussion B1 cancelled
4/30/14 10:43 AM

Hi all,

for those of you who are in discussion B1 on Thursday afternoon, I said previously that this would be the only discussion scheduled for this week.

We don't have any new material to discuss, several of you joined alternative discussions last week and I will be busy grading your lab exams at that time. For this reasons, I am cancelling this last discussion as well.

If you have specific questions, I will be available on Friday afternoon 3-5 during regular office hours or on Monday during extra office hours (2-4pm in SCI 294).

For students who didn't fill out evaluation forms about discussion (ONLY ABOUT DISCUSSION) we will do this quickly at the end of the lab exam tomorrow afternoon.

Have a good day, I will see you tomorrow at 1pm for the lab exam,

Daniele.

Schedule for the last week of classes
4/25/14 5:20 PM

Hi all,

to summarize all announcements I wrote in other posts and gave during discussion, here is the schedule for the last week of class.

- Monday - no practice session in SCI 512; review session for the lab exam in SCI 113 instead from 7 - 9pm. It includes an end of semester "demo"; some of you already guessed what that demo is....
- Tuesday - lecture as scheduled, quiz during lecture. Mini-quiz will NOT be accepted.
- Wednesday - labs are over, nothing on schedule.
- Thursday - Lab exam at 1pm in SCI 109; last lecture; no discussions. Mini-quiz due.
- Friday - study period starts, office hours 3-5pm in SCI 200B.
- Saturday - review session for the final exam, 9am-1pm in PHO 206

- Monday - I'll have extra office hours in the afternoon, 2-4pm in SCI 294 (this is the room where we had the post test about spectroscopy)
- Tuesday - Final exam, 6-8pm in SCI 109.

Daniele.

Final exam review session
4/23/14 11:00 AM

Hi again,

I just received confirmation of the room reservation for the review session for the final exam.

We will hold it in PHO 206 on Saturday 5/03 beginning at 9 am, expect it to last until about 1pm. Feel free to bring food. I'll provide coffee and else....

Lab exam review session
4/23/14 9:21 AM

Hi all,

the review for the lab exam is scheduled for Monday 4/28 at 7pm in SCI 113. It should go no later than 9pm.

Daniele.

last discussion quiz rescheduled.
4/22/14 9:27 AM

Hi all,

the last quiz of the semester which was scheduled for this week's discussions, is re-scheduled for next Tuesday, during lecture. This applies to everybody; so if we had made arrangements to make it up at a different time (due to holiday/Monday schedule/schedule conflicts/etc...), be aware that you don't need to come take it this week at a different time. It will be next week during lecture for everybody. Keyes and I think this will be logistically easier.

This change will give us time to review the material about enthalpy of chemical changes during discussion this week. As a reminder, Thursday has a Monday schedule, there will be no discussion B1 in the afternoon and no lecture. We will still have the evening discussion B2 in SCI 512 instead. So, it will cover up to section 8.16 included.

Daniele.

Tonight's practice.
3/31/14 2:44 PM

Good afternoon,

I hope you enjoyed a full week-end without any chemistry: no exam or quiz to study for, no lab reports to prepare, no WebAssign homework and no practice sheet to work on. You only have to do the mini-qiuz for tomorrow evening.

I'm writing only to remind that practice resumes tonight at 7pm in SCI 512; I will have copies of the new practice sheet (which I will pass out in discussion this week), and we can begin working on them.

There is no quiz this week, but there will be one next week about chapters 5 and 6, so you may want to start thinking about the material included in these two chapters.

Daniele.
