Description

Prior knowledge of programming and statistics are not required. We shall lay a good foundation in the basic quantitative analysis & upgrade into a more advanced statistical analysis (statistical tests, different classes of regression models: fixed & mixed-effect regression models, machine learning algorithms, advanced data visualization, data cleaning in R, etc.). We will also learn adequately about looping (for loops, while loops, etc.), use of apply functions (lapply, sapply, mcapply, etc.), storing results from loops as a vector, matrix or three-dimensional array; writing your own functions for some tasks to prove some theorems (central limit theorem, bootstrapping, jackknife and Latin hypercube sampling schemes, etc.), do novel simulations (of probability distributions, and other statistical processes) and parallelising codes for high speed depending on the complexity of the problem, use of existing libraries/packages for data analysis, amongst others. Lots of practice tasks assigned.

General Information

Background of Instructor
Dr Clement Twumasi is currently a Medical Statistician at Oxford University's Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM), focusing on the Life-saving Vaccines theme supported by the Oxford NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. In this capacity, he contributes to research aimed at enhancing our understanding of vaccination in chronic diseases and aging, as well as developing strategies for the prevention and treatment of persistent viral infections like HIV, HBV, and HCV. Previously, he served as a Clinical Trial Statistician at Imperial College London and as a postdoctoral researcher in Biostatistics at the Department of Statistics, Oxford University. He has a PhD in Mathematics from Cardiff University (UK), where he was also a Vice-Chancellor's PhD scholar of the university (with outsanding academic achievements within and outside the UK). He has a very robust background in Mathematics and Statistics, with range of statistical expertise and programming.

Advanced R programming SkillUp MasterClass organised by NUGS-China
7/02/22 5:07 PM

Prior knowledge of programming in R and statistics is not required. We shall lay a good foundation in the basic quantitative analysis & upgrade into a more advanced statistical analysis involving: statistical tests, different classes of regression models: fixed & mixed-effect regression models, machine learning algorithms, advanced data visualization, data cleaning, use of existing libraries/packages for data analysis in R, amongst others. The use of R IDEs like R studio and Jupyter Notebook is demonstrated with lots of other tasks/examples.

Main Objectives:

1. Brief introduction to mathematical/statistical programming and important info on data analyses (e.g., variables, data structures, inferential tests & model fitting).

2. Description of R IDEs including installation & loading of packages (e.g., R studio, Jupyter Notebook).

3. Setting working directory, importing and exporting data of different extensions (.CSV, .TXT, XLS/XLXS, SPSS, SAS, STATA, etc.).

4. Sourcing of external R scripts/Complex R Functions, descriptive summaries & data visualisations in R.

5. Interesting Practice Task (Instructor will describe the problem): Using statistics to aid in forensic or crime detection investigation of a mummy with the help of a GLM classification model.

Announcement
This is a detailed presentation on Advanced Quantitative Analysis for Research. It was a talk organized by a UK-based professor in his master class (Prof Gokah’s Master Class dated April 10, 2021), and I was honoured to present on Advanced Quantitative Analysis for Research. You can comment, share with your contacts and subscribe to the YouTube Channel to motivate us for more interesting packages. There are very interesting 12 videos on advanced data analysis in R software already on the YouTube channel (Clement Twumasi Educative Channel) for students to learn at their own pace.

The beamer slide for this presentation can be found in the link below (can also be found on my Piazza website resource section for those who have access):πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Brief information on statistics, statistical methods, data variables, different kinds of data structures and other methods of analysis (Qualitative and Mixed methods) were also covered. Finally, advanced statistical tests (univariate & multivariate tests) and a range of statistical models (fixed-effect regression models, mixed-effect regression models, Functional data analysis and Machine learning algorithms) were further elaborated.

The National Union of Ghanaian Students in China (NUGS-China) organized an intensive 4-day event on Advanced Data Analysis in R programming software (dated 17-20th March 2021); which was advertised here on this platform some days ago. The event was recorded and uploaded on YouTube for interested students to learn at their own pace. All scripts/R codes and data used have been uploaded on my Piazza website, and you can have access for free at no cost once you are already enrolled on my Piazza platform.

To enrol on Piazza, you can send me an email via twumasic@cardiff.ac.uk for an invitation link. There are already 8 exclusive videos + these 4 new ones on R programming on my YouTube channel: Clement Twumasi Educative Channel. You can search for the channel name. I would be glad if you could also subscribe to my YouTube channel & share it with your contacts. This will help grow the channel and encourage the production of much more exciting contents at no cost.  This is my little contribution to humanity.

Thank you all once again, and I hope my initiatives become very useful to all. Have a wonderful day.
