The Master's Program in Computational Data Science began in 2004 as the MSIT degree in Very Large Information Systems, and is now in its 9th year of operation. The program focuses on training professional Master's students in all aspects of design, engineering and deployment of very large information systems. Organizations that have employed CDS graduates include Amazon, Apple, Bank of America, CBS Interactive, Google, Groupon, Linkedin, Medallia, Meebo, Microsoft, NetAapp, Next Jump, Oracle, Salesforce, Government of Thailand, Twitter, VMware, VoCollect, and Yahoo. Our current placement rate among students who graduate is near 100%. Typical job titles for graduates include Software Engineer, Data Scientist, or Project Manager.
There are two tracks in the MCDS program: the Systems Track and the Analytics Track. Both require the same total number of course credits, split among required core courses, electives, data science seminar and capstone courses which are specifically defined for each track. The courses in the program are taught primarily by faculty from the Computer Science Department, Machine Learning Department, Language Technologies Institute, and the Institute for Software Research, which are all part of CMU's School of Computer Science.
