Website: Our course website will be
https://piazza.com/cornell/spring2013/tam5780/home
Please enroll yourself there. You can post questions there, and other students or the teaching staff can answer them. Homework and other information will be posted there too.

Grading:
20% homework
20% Prelim 1 (In class, Feb 14)
60% final exam (take-home, due in first week of exam period)

Homework: Will be assigned on most Thursdays, due the next Thursday in class. Will be checked for completeness, but not graded in detail. Solutions will be available. Late homework will not be accepted.

Academic Integrity:
This course follows the usual Academic Integrity Policy for tests. No collaboration or copying allowed. However, the homework policy is unusual. You are allowed to work together, and can even copy the answers from a friend’s homework if you wish. Similarly, you may copy homework solutions from websites, if you can find them. Obviously this is a poor strategy for learning the course, but it may be better than nothing if you are short on time. However, in all cases you must write or type the solutions yourself; photocopying or submitting an electronic copy of someone else’s work is not allowed. (The idea is that by physically writing or typing the solutions, you may learn something even if you did not solve the problem yourself.)

Topics:
1-D systems and bifurcations (2 weeks)
2-D systems: phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations (3.5 weeks)
Lorenz equations and chaos (2.5 weeks)
1-D maps and period doubling route to chaos, renormalization (2 weeks)
Fractals and strange attractors (2 weeks)
More topics and applications if time permits
