Description

This course is designed for First year MSc Chemistry students.

It covers the following topics:

Concept of ensembles, partition functions and distributions, microcanonical, canonical and grand canonical ensembles, canonical and grand canonical partition functions, Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions. Canonical partition function in terms of molecular partition function of non-interacting particles, Translational, rotational and vibrational partition functions. 

Temperature dependence of the second virial coefficient. Thermodynamics of solids - Einstein and Debye models. T3 dependence of heat capacity of solids at low temperatures. 

Fermi function, Fermi energy, free electron model and density of states, chemical potential of conduction electrons.

πŸ•° Classes will be on Tuesday 11:30 – 12:50 and Friday 10:00 – 11:20

✍️ There will be two tierce exams : First tierce (03rd Feb – 05th Feb) and second Tierce (18th March – 20th March).

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ« In first tierce, we’ll get 10 lectures and in second tierce we’ll get ~12 lectures. Each lecture has a duration of 1h20m.
