Description
This is an intermediate-to-advanced course in Einstein's general relativity theory and its application to universe at the large scales (cosmology). However given the composition of the class, we will review basics of general relativity theory to some detail before we begin cosmology.
The course can be roughly imagined to consist of two halves. The first half of the course is dedicated to elementary topics in general relativity: special relativity, the equivalence principle and differential geometry (tensor calculus), Einstein's field equations and few simple solutions of the Einstein field equations: gravitational waves and the Schwarzschild black hole. The second half of the class is dedicated to application of general relativity to the large scale structure of the universe - we will review basics of big bang cosmology and if time permits an introduction to inflationary cosmology.
