"Anonymized" course feedback

I promised that I'd share your aggregated feedback. Here's a link. The columns that begin with numeric values are sorted, making it harder to infer who is whom.

bring simple IML systems tomorrow, upcoming assignments, and scheduling toolkit talks
10/18/13 8:08 AM

Hi, everyone.

A few things.

(1) Tomorrow, we'll practice some of the HCI research techniques that I presented a few weeks back. You will use your simple IML system for this activity, so bring a laptop or whatever you need to run it. If that's an issue, email me at least a few hours before class and we'll figure something out.

(2) I've added some of the upcoming assignments to the schedule on the website. Note that there is a reading, a preliminary research assignment (dissect an ML algorithm for interaction possibilities), and a final-project proposal now listed. The proposal will be discussed in class tomorrow and should take you some time. I'm allowing you to work in groups as large as three, so start thinking about topics and potential collaborators. I'm excited to see what you all come up with. :)

(3) If you haven't already, please email me to schedule your toolkit presentation. There is currently room on 11/6 and later dates.

See you all in class!

Brad

Final part of the "simple IML system" assignment and reading for next week
10/03/13 10:51 AM
Hi, all.

I've posted the instructions for the last part of the simple IML system assignment and moved the due date back to Friday, 10/11: http://excedrin.media.mit.edu/iml/assignment-instructions/.

There's also a reading response due on Tuesday (apologies for missing my promised one-week notice mark). You'll find it on the course schedule: http://excedrin.media.mit.edu/iml/schedule/.

Upcoming assignments and other announcements
9/30/13 11:45 PM
Hi, everyone.

First, I'd like to remind you that your assignment "Add human input to the [in-progress simple IML] system" is due on Wednesday before class. You won't hand anything in at that point, but on Friday I plan to have everyone share what they've done and their plans for the final part (adding transparency) to the class. The exact format of this sharing will be specified later; you do not need to prepare for it beyond understanding how to informally explain what you've done.
Also, since it's less than a week until Thursday and I have a reading discussion scheduled, I'm giving a special reading assignment and response that shouldn't take much time. You'll read the first two sections of Principles of mixed-initiative user interfaces by Horvitz. That is only the first page and a half. As a response, I want you to number out Horvitz's 12 principles. For each of the 12, write on Piazza whether you (a) largely agree, (b) agree but with at least one considerable reservation, or (c) largely disagree. Feel free to say why and/or add your own principles, but only the 12 assessments of the principles are required this Thursday by 1pm. Be ready to discuss your opinions in class. To be clear, a valid reading response would be:
1. a
2. a
3. c
....
12. b

The final part of your simple IML system assignment will be due Wednesday, 10/9. I'll try to get the exact description up soon.

If you want to see what grades you've received so far, ask me after class on Friday.

See you Wednesday!

Kayur Patel (Google, Columbia) guest lectures on Wednesday; optional reading
9/30/13 11:42 PM
Hi, all.

I'll send another email about assignments with upcoming due dates (e.g., the "simple IML system" one due before class on Wednesday). For now, I'd like to share the following readings, which Kayur Patel will talk about on Wednesday. These readings are optional.

Due this week
9/23/13 12:26 PM
Hey, all. There are two assignments due this week.

Before class on Wednesday is your first part of Designing a Simple IML System assignment.

And due on Thursday is your response to Cakmak et al.'s Designing Interactions for Robot Active Learners.
See you all on Wednesday!
