Description
This course provides an introduction to various literary genres (theatrical works, autobiography, novel, diary, poetry) within the field of literary study. The readings in this course provide a sampling of these genres within the context of American childhood and youth. The concept of childhood and adolescence has been the source of anxiety and contention for decades within Western culture. U.S. popular culture, in particular, demonstrates an intense preoccupation with the habits, dress, and music of the nation’s youth after World War II. We will analyze texts for how they represent issues of maturity, gender, race, national identity, patriotism, urban warfare, and other socio-historical themes. The course will require your active participation and engagement with the texts. Assignments will include a short close-reading assignment (5 pages), and a final research paper/project (8–10 pages).

Conferences reminder
11/26/12 - 7:09 PM
ENG 2012:
This is a reminder that this 11/20, 11/27, 11/28, 11/29 and 12/4 are conferences. We are not meeting as a group, but instead each of you has signed up for an appointment. This appointment is mandatory and counts for your attendance for the week. It is assumed that you are using the time apart from this appointment to work on your final project. For this appointment, you must bring an outline or first page of your writing. You must also bring a scholarly source (e.g. printed article, book).
If your appointment time is during our normal class time, you are meeting with me in the classroom. If your appointment time is during a time before or after class, then you are meeting me at the Einstein's in the Graham Center.
Best,
Dr. J
