Description

ME482 focuses on microstructure-property relationships of tissue in the musculoskeletal system including bone, tendon, ligament, cartilage, and muscle.

The goal is to understand how the tissue structure and composition relate to mechanical properties of healthy and diseased tissue. Emphasis is placed on experimental tissue mechanics.

Final written projects
12/10/16 11:46 AM

ME 482 Students,

Be sure to look back at your past paper reviews to see what kinds of errors you were making and that I corrected.  I spent time and effort correcting them already, I don't want to see them in the final report! Otherwise, I will feel like my effort was wasted and you will have a lower score...so no body wins!

See you Monday evening!

that and which
12/09/16 3:37 PM

Hello ME 482 Students,

I hope you had either a productive OR a restful reading day.  I don't know if both are possible!

I have a challenge for you!!

Any final written report that uses "that" and "which" appropriately 100% of the time will get a couple of extra points on their written report score.

This is a mistake that almost every student has made as least a couple of times in the different documents this semester.  It would be very satisfying to me if there was evidence that students were understanding when to use these properly by the very final graded assignment.

If you use "which" in the middle of a sentence, it should be followed by a comma and what comes after it is less important than what comes before it.  In fact, if you use "..., which" then the part of the sentence before the comma would make sense and be fine without what comes after. You can look up online use of "that" and "which" if this explanation is unclear.

Happy studying to all!

Presentation Schedule
12/07/16 12:53 PM

All,

Below is the schedule for the presentations Monday evening, starting at 7pm.  Presentations have been good! Great job keeping to the schedule.  That will be great for Monday night so that we have time for a couple of short breaks.

If you are presenting in the first or second groups, please come early and get your presentation loaded.  If you are the first person to arrive, please make a folder on the desktop for presentations.  I will arrive ~645-650. The room should be open anytime. Have a backup plan in case your presentation does not work on the computer (or in case your own computer does not work). If you will use your own computer, please check that it will work ok before 7pm.  There might be 8 groups doing this before the "exam" starts, so plan accordingly.

If you are in the third group, you can load your presentations either during the first or second break.  Follow same instructions as above.

To start the system, pull out the drawer under the keyboard and push "ON" which is next to "OFF" in the upper LEFT corner of the control panel.

See you Monday if not before!

Presentations Monday
12/04/16 5:54 PM

All -

I am re-posting the information about presentations. For those who are presenting tomorrow, please arrive at the classroom at 10:50 ready to load your presentations on the computer. Please have a backup plan in case there is some problem with the class computer or with running your file on the class computer.

I will be there at 10:50.  We will start right at 11.

Presentations will be 12 minutes long, allowing 3 minutes for questions and switching groups.

See you tomorrow!

Presentations on 12/5 and 12/7

All -

Using a random number generator and your UINs, I generated the list of groups that will present on the 5th and 7th of December.  See below.  You will present in this order on the assigned days. You must load your presentation on the class computer before class. There is a class in the room before ours, but you should arrive at 10:50 and be ready to load your presentation as soon as Professor Toussaint is finished.  I will let him know that we will be trying to load presentations ASAP.

Bring a backup in case that computer is not working, or in case your presentation will not run on that version of Powerpoint etc.  So, in summary, load it on that computer, but also be prepared with a computer on which you KNOW your presentation will work properly.  If needed, we can hook up individual computers, but this takes more time.

Thanks for your enthusiasm in volunteering to go early.  Also, please make sure to fill out the exam poll if you have not already done so.  I would like to get that settled.

Lab 4 Data
12/03/16 11:22 AM

Hi Class,

Here's the lab 4 data. There are many samples for both dry and wet. Analyze at least 5 sets of data for each group.

Best,

Zack

Lab 4 in Talbot Tomorrow
12/01/16 2:17 PM

Hi All,

Tomorrow, Lab 4 is in Talbot. The website says you can meet by the docking bay in the back of the building. You can go through the door and meet in the basement by the crane bay; try your best to stay out of the way of the workers (so hang back near the hallway).

And remember the note from Monday's class. The equation presented for modulus of toughness was based on the load-deflection curve, not the stress-deflection curve. So when you do your calculations, remember to use the correct function.

Best,

Zack
