CSE 250a final exam inspection, Thu 10:30-12:30, CSE 3214
1/06/16 12:18 PM

I will be in my office (#3214) Thursday 10:30-12:30 for students who wish to inspect their final exams and/or peruse the solutions.

In addition, I will set up another time for students who cannot make it during that period.

(Note that you will not be allowed to keep the final exams or the solutions.)

Opportunity for research project on voice print analysis in autism
1/05/16 10:45 AM

Hello all,

A professor at the medical school has come to me with a potentially interesting research project.  Roughly speaking, the goal is to measure a certain property of speech — the degree of nasalization —and from such measurements to build a non-invasive detector of autism in children.  We are interested in assembling a team of students who could take this idea from prototype (e.g., hidden Markov models trained on speech samples) to working system (e.g., an iPhone app that doctors could use in practice).

I think there is room for a team of students with different skills to collaborate on this project, so if you are interested, just add your name and email to this thread.  A couple of things:

* This project, because it is a *team* project, is very unlikely to satisfy the master's project requirement for research.  So participation in this project will not exempt you from passing the qualifying exams in AI and machine learning.  Please do not sign up with that expectation.

* Participation in this project can be used for 1-2 units of academic credit in the winter quarter.  If we make progress, that arrangement may continue for subsequent quarters.

* Please sign up in the next 24-48 hrs. We would like to kickstart the project as soon as possible.  If there are more students than we can accommodate, I will consider various criteria for assembling a team.  But to emphasize, we need a broad range of skills, from algorithmic know-how to signal processing to system-building.  So I am purposely casting a wide net here.

Thanks,

Lawrence

final exam and grades
12/18/15 8:42 AM

You should now be able to see your final exam score (on GradeSource) and overall grade (onTritonLink) for CSE 250a.  This was a strong class, and I adjusted the curve accordingly.

We do not return the final exams or solutions for CSE 250a, but you are entitled to inspect your exam at the beginning of winter quarter.  I will post a sign-up sheet outside my office (in January) for those who wish to do so.

In the meantime do enjoy your winter break!

Final exam information -- IMPORTANT
12/10/15 8:51 AM

The final exam will take place Friday December 11, 11:30-2:30, in the following rooms of the CSE Building:

CSE 1202 -- last names (A-L)

CSE 4258 -- last names (M-Sh)

CSE 2154 -- last names (Si-Z)

Please arrive to your designated classroom early

         *** by 11:15 am ***

because seating will be assigned, and it may take us a while to get everyone settled.

Since this is a final exam, some stricter rules will be in place.  No student will be admitted without a photo ID.  In addition, any attempt to circumvent the seating policy -- at any point during the exam -- will be treated as a violation of academic integrity.  If you have special needs (e.g., a left-handed desk), let us know via Piazza (preferably) or at the beginning of the exam, and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

During the course of the exam, if a particular area of the room seems too crowded, an instructor may ask you to move to a different seat.  Please honor the request; it is not intended as an accusation.

It would be best to bring only pencils, pens, and erasers to the exam.  You will not need a calculator, and we will provide additional scratch paper to those who request it.  All backpacks, notebooks, cell phones, ear phones, etc will need to be left in a pile at the front of the room, and we will not be responsible for lost items.  Also, since it's a long exam, feel free to bring a beverage and/or a snack (that can be eaten quietly).

Thanks in advance for your cooperation, and good luck to everyone on the exam!

Office hours Thu 3-4 pm (Dec 10)
12/09/15 11:26 PM

I will hold my office hours as usual this week, Thu 3-4 pm, in room 3214.  I am happy to see both old and new faces.

HW 7 solutions - correction to 7.2
12/08/15 11:27 PM

Apologies -- I mistakenly solved problem 7.2 for a maze that contained more dragons than the one you were assigned.  (Such is the danger of customizable demos that change from year to year.)  Below is the correct answer to 7.2 for the maze that you were given.

HW 7 turn-in and solutions
12/08/15 9:48 AM

It turns out, today, that I have an off-campus meeting at noon, but I will return later in the afternoon.  The solutions for HW 7 will be outside my door by 3 pm at the latest.
